Firecracker prompts fire response in Loop subway
June 21, 2010 Sun-Times Media Wire Smoke from a firecracker prompted a brief response from firefighters Monday afternoon in a Loop subway, just a day after 19 people were injured in an extra-alarm fire in the Red Line subway on the Near North Side. An EMS Plan 1, which sends five ambulances, was called to the subway at Jackson and State streets about 12:55 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis. A firecracker was to blame for some smoke that was reported in the subway and the fire response was precautionary, Curtis said. There were no reports of injuries and crews secured the area about 10 minutes later. On Sunday, a “small fire” started on the tracks near the Chicago Avenue station and power was removed about 5:10 p.m. Nineteen people were taken to area hospitals as a precaution. None had life-threatening injuries. The cause of the Sunday fire, which forced the CTA to re-route trains, was still being investigated on Monday. http://www.suntimes.com/news/24-7/24...062110.article
